Mahmoud Al-Jaafari completed his secondary education in the scientific branch at Bethlehem Secondary School in 1976. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Economics and Statistics from the University of Jordan in Amman in 1980. He obtained both his Master's and Ph.D. degrees from Mississippi and Missouri universities in the United States in 1982 and 1986, respectively.
He has been working as a professor of economics at Al-Quds University in Jerusalem since 1996. He served two terms as the Dean of the Faculty of Business at the university and as the Director of the Institute of Management and Economics. He also held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Commerce at the Islamic University in Gaza from 1990 to 1995 and was a visiting professor at Birzeit University in 2010-2011. Additionally, he worked as a part-time lecturer at universities in Hebron, Birzeit, and Bethlehem. In 1992-1993, he was a visiting professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He has also had academic visits at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, the University of Florence in Italy, and the University of Toronto in Canada.
In 1994, he was awarded the Shoman Award as an outstanding young Arab scholar in the field of economics. He has published numerous scientific articles in peer-reviewed international journals, as well as studies for the UNCTAD in Geneva and the Economic Studies Institute (MAS) in Ramallah. He is a fellow researcher at the Economic Research Forum for Arab Countries, Turkey, and Iran in Cairo and a member of the Steering Committee of the Union of Institutes and Universities of the Mediterranean in France. He is also a fellow researcher at the Economic Studies Institute (MAS) in Ramallah and a member of the Steering Committee of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. He has previously been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Palestinian Monetary Authority.
