Jalal Hosni Abu Hayya did not expect that one day he would be able to regain his teenage hobby. He also did not imagine that he would have to sit in a wheelchair after being targeted by bullets from the occupation forces
In a small workshop in the town of Bani Suhaila, east of the city of Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip, forty-year-old Jalal Abu Hayya moves around in his wheelchair with the help of one of his sons. Here he makes Arab swords, daggers, and other types of metal products, after his life changed in 2018 following an injury to his back at the hands of the Israeli occupation that left him partially paralyzed.
Abu Hayya did not want to stay at home despite his injury, so he re-entered the labor market through a hobby that had attracted him since he was a teenager, which was making swords and daggers. For him, “this is the most suitable profession for my condition at the present time.” But he works according to the electricity supply schedule in his area, one day from the early morning hours until the afternoon, and the next day from the afternoon until night.
