Hashim Abdullah al-Jayyusi (1901 -
June 25, 1981) was a Palestinian politician and human rights activist, born in
the Palestinian city of Tulkarm. He was the mayor of Tulkarm, and a senior
minister who participated in the Jordanian governments in many ministerial
positions. He also held the position of deputy speaker of the Jordanian Senate.
He is called the “Minister Crossing Governments.”
His upbringing and education
Hashem Abdullah al-Jayousi was born
in the Palestinian city of Tulkarm in 1901. He received his education in the schools
of his city, Tulkarm, and finished secondary school at the Islamic College in
Beirut, then joined the American University there, where he studied law for two
years.
Beginning with political life
After Hashem al-Jayousi finished his
university studies, he returned to his hometown of Tulkarem, where he worked as
a lawyer, and later held several positions in the city, including president of
the Tulkarem court, president of the municipality of Tulkarem, deputy head of
the local education committee, and a member of the city’s executive committee.

His death and immortality
Hashem al-Jayousi died in the
Jordanian capital, Amman, on Thursday morning, corresponding to June 25, 1981.
A group of Palestinian and Jordanian personalities mourned his death, including
the Jordanian Prime Minister at the time, Mudar Badran, the former Jordanian Prime
Minister Bahjat Al-Talhouni, and the Mayor of Tulkarm Hilmi Hanoun, as we
mourned him. Palestinian politician Abd al-Hamid al-Sayeh said: "The
deceased met the face of his Lord without his wish to return to Palestine being
fulfilled, and without his eyes seeing his birthplace liberated from his
usurpers and the banners of pride raised over his quarter."
In memory of Hashem al-Jayousi, his
name was given to a street in the Jordanian capital, Amman.
