Ismail Muhammad Yassin Abu Shamala (born on September 1, 1941 in
Beit Daras - died on November 22, 2015 in Ramallah) was a Palestinian
politician and diplomat, and a member of the Fatah movement and the Palestinian
Revolutionary Council. He held the position of ambassador of the Palestine
Liberation Organization to Afghanistan, and the ambassador of the State of
Palestine to Bulgaria. And the position of governor of the northern Gaza
governorate.
Education and educational attainment
Abu Shamala was born on September 1, 1941 in the village of Beit
Daras in the Gaza district, during the British Mandate of Palestine. His family
was expelled, and the village was destroyed by Zionist gangs in the Nakba War
in 1948, when they sought refuge in the Gaza Strip and settled in Al-Bureij
camp.
He received his primary and preparatory education in the schools
of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the
camp, and he received his secondary education in the Nuseirat camp and obtained
his secondary education in 1957. He obtained a BA in Arabic language literature
from Beirut Arab University.
practical life
After his graduation, he moved between Saudi Arabia, where he
joined the Fatah movement, and also to Syria. He assumed the duties of the representative
of the Fatah movement in Algeria until 1973, and he also took over the unified
media in Damascus until 1983.
He was appointed representative of the Palestine Liberation
Organization to Afghanistan in 1985, and later the ambassador of the State of
Palestine to Bulgaria until 1994.
Israel allowed him to return to the Palestinian territories
after the signing of the Oslo Accords, where on December 5, 1994 he was
appointed Director General of the Palestinian Ministry of Local Government. On
August 1, 1996, he was appointed Assistant Undersecretary for the Palestinian
Ministry of Local Government.
Appointed on March 27, 2005, Governor of the North Gaza
Governorate. On January 1, 2009, he was granted the rank of minister.
In August 2009, he won the Fatah Revolutionary Council elections
that were held during the Sixth Fatah Movement Conference in Bethlehem and
became a member of it.
He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Palestinian
Electricity Company between 2006 and 2010.
