Rawiya Al Shawa (1944 - 2017) is a Palestinian politician . She was a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council from 1996 until her death. [1]
Her life
Rawiya was born in December 1944 in the Al-Shujaiya neighborhood, east of Gaza City , to a Lebanese mother and a Palestinian father. Her father is Rashad Al-Shawwa , who served as mayor of Haifa in 1935 and served as mayor of Gaza in the period between 1972-1975. [1] [2] She married Aoun Saadi Al-Shawa, the first mayor of Gaza during the era of the Palestinian National Authority , and had four children with him. [2] She is fluent in English , and took university courses at the American University in Cairo .
Rawiya worked in the field of commerce, [2] and also worked in the field of journalism, where she wrote for the Al-Nahar newspaper in Jerusalem, then she moved on to write in the Al-Quds newspaper. In the early nineties, Rawiya founded the Gaza Cultural Group, where she worked on organizing seminars and workshops, and in 2003 she re-established it as an association bearing the name “Gaza Group for Culture and Development.” Rawiya was also the president and/or member of many Palestinian institutions and associations.
She was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council in 1996 as an independent representative from the Gaza Governorate and obtained 18,295 votes. She founded and headed the Democratic Alliance Bloc, and in 2006 she was re-elected as a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council and remained there until her death on July 4, 2017.
Her death
Rawya died on July 4, 2017 in Gaza City after a long struggle with illness that lasted about a year and a half. [1]
