Arif Pasha al-Dajani ( 1856-1928 , born in Jerusalem) was a Palestinian Arab politician , and former mayor of Jerusalem .
He also had firm positions against the Mandate Government.
His educational career
His educational career included learning religion at the hands of his father, Sheikh Bakr Al-Dajani. He also studied elementary sciences in the schools of Jerusalem, and excelled in two languages, Arabic and Turkish .
In his twenty-third year, he went to Istanbul to study law and the French language.
His positions
After Aref graduated, he was appointed as the governor of Deir ez-Zor , and then as the governor of Diyarbakir . The last position he held was the governorship of Yemen , where he was awarded the title of Bashouriya during his stay in Sana’a .
Then he was elected as a member of the Council of Representatives for the Jerusalem Mutasarrifate , and he resided in the Ottoman capital.
He became mayor of Jerusalem during World War I. In 1918 he became a representative on the administrative committee of the Muslim Christian Association , then became president of the association's branch in Jerusalem before becoming president of the association. He contributed to the establishment of the First Palestinian Congress in Jerusalem in 1919 , which called for the revival of unity with Syria , and he was the first president of the conference.
In 1920 AD, he was chosen to be Vice President of the Executive Committee of the Arab Palestinian Congress.
In 1927, Aref headed the national list for the Jerusalem Municipal Council exams, but his list did not prevail over the opposing list.
Arif was distinguished by his firm positions towards the Mandate government, and he also opposed its policy of supporting the Zionist movement , and he refused, like others, to be appointed by the British High Commissioner to the Advisory Council.
