Issam Abdel Ghani Abdel Hadi was born in Nablus in 1928. She studied at the Aisha Secondary School and completed her secondary education at the Friends School in Ramallah. In 1949, she was elected Secretary of the Arab Women's Union Association in Nablus and remained in this position until her deportation from her homeland in 1969.
She was elected president of the General Union of Palestinian Women in 1965 at its first founding conference held in Jerusalem, and remained president of the Union until the writing of this book. She was a member of the first Palestinian National Council, which convened in Jerusalem in 1964. She was elected to the Palestinian Central Council in 1974, and was the only woman on the Council for four years. She played a leading role in the resistance against the Israeli occupation, which led to her arrest, along with her daughter Faiha, for nearly two months. Israeli forces then deported her and her daughter to Jordan on April 26, 1969. She was elected to the Higher Committee of the Jerusalem Rescue Committee, which was headed by the late Suleiman al-Nabulsi. In 1981, she was elected vice president of the Women's International Democratic Federation. She participated in six conferences and seminars of the UN Commission on the Status of Women and dozens of Arab and international women's conferences. She headed the Palestine Liberation Organization delegation to the first World Conference on Women, held in Mexico under the auspices of the United Nations, where the Palestinian delegation requested the condemnation of Zionism as a racist movement. The conference responded favorably, and this request was included in its final statement. Asia was represented at the People's Conference on Human Rights held in Vienna in 1993.
