Информация

Aref Pasha Dajani (1856 AD - 1928 AD, born in Jerusalem) was a Palestinian Arab politician and former mayor of Jerusalem.

He also possessed solid positions in front of the Mandate Government.

His educational career
His educational career included his learning of religion at the hands of his father, Sheikh Bakr Al-Dajani. He also studied elementary sciences in the schools of Jerusalem, and excelled in two languages, Arabic and Turkish.

In his twenty-third year, he went to Istanbul to study law and the French language.

After graduating, Aref was appointed administrator of the city of Deir ez-Zor, including administrator of Diyar Bakr.

Then he was elected as a member of the council of envoys for the Jerusalem Mutasarrifate, and he resided in the Ottoman capital.

He became mayor of Jerusalem during the First World War. In 1918 he became a representative in the administrative committee of the Islamic Christian Society, then became head of the Society's branch in Jerusalem before becoming president of the Society. He contributed to the establishment of the first Palestinian conference in Jerusalem in 1919 AD, which called for reviving unity with Syria, and was the first president of the conference.

In 1920, he was chosen to be the vice-chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Arab Conference.

In 1927, Aref headed the National List for the Jerusalem Municipal Council Exams, but his list did not beat the opposition list.

Aref distinguished himself with his solid stances before the Mandate government, and he also opposed its policy of supporting the Zionist movement, and, like others, refused to be appointed by the British High Commissioner to the Consultative Council.
