Said Abu Ali (born January 13, 1955 in Jenin) is a Palestinian politician and jurist. He held important roles in the Palestinian presidency, and was governor of the governorates of Nablus, Ramallah and Al-Bireh. He also held the position of Palestinian Minister of Interior, and he is currently the Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.

Said Abdel Rahman Ahmed Abu Ali was born in 1955 in the city of Jenin in the northern West Bank of the State of Palestine and received his school education there. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Law from Al-Quds University. He traveled to Tunisia and joined the Palestine Liberation Organization, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in journalism and media, a master’s degree in 1989 in political science, and a doctorate in law in 1995. In 1992 he received a doctorate in international organizations from the University of Toulouse in France, and in 2015 he obtained a degree Professorship from Al-Quds University in Palestine.

Member of the Permanent Representative of Palestine to the Arab League from 1980 to 1984.
Director of Arab Affairs at the Palestinian Planning Center in Tunis from 1984 to 1989.
Counselor at the Embassy of the Palestine Liberation Organization in Tunisia from 1989 to 1995.
On October 16, 1995, he was appointed Director General in the Presidential Secretariat and served until 2002.
On November 18, 2002, he was appointed Assistant Under-Secretary of the Presidential Secretariat and served until 2005.
On April 14, 2005, he was appointed Governor of the Ministry of Interior and National Security and Coordinator of Governors Affairs.
On May 22, 2005, he was transferred from his position in the Ministry of Interior and National Security to the Palestinian Presidency as Assistant Secretary-General of the Presidency and Coordinator of Governors Affairs with the rank of Minister.
On December 23, 2005, he was assigned to serve as the Governor of Nablus Governorate.
On September 10, 2006, he was transferred and appointed Governor of Ramallah and Al-Bireh Governorate.
On May 19, 2009, he assumed the position of Minister of the Interior Ministry within Salam Fayyad's second government and continued in the position in his third and Rami Hamdallah's first and second governments.
On January 20, 2016, he was sworn in as Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Palestine Sector and the Occupied Palestinian Territories in the League of Arab States.
Abu Ali has also worked since 1995 and at various times as a lecturer with the rank of associate professor in several Palestinian universities: Al-Azhar University, Birzeit University and Al-Quds University.

 

 

Achievements and Awards

On August 25, 2013, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas awarded Said Abu Ali the Jerusalem Star Military Medal.
