Jack Khazmo (1951-2020) Jerusalemite writer and journalist, founder, owner and editor-in-chief of Al-Bayader Al-Siyasi magazine, which was published in Jerusalem. He passed away after a long media career that spanned more than half a century in defending the rights of the Palestinian people to freedom and independence. One of the founders of the General Union of Palestinian Writers and Writers. Awarded the Medal of Appreciation of the First Class from the Palestinian Appreciation Institute.
his life and career
Jack Khazmo was born in the Quarter of Honor in the Old City of Jerusalem in 1951. He was educated at the Martin Luther Preparatory School in Jerusalem and graduated in 1969 from the Bishop's High School in Jerusalem. He obtained a diploma from Birzeit College in 1971, and a BA in Chemistry from the American University of Beirut in 1973.
He and his wife, Nada Hayek Khazmo, founded the literary magazines Al-Bayader (1976) and Al-Bayader Al-Siyasi (1981). Al-Bayader literary magazine contributed to the establishment of the Palestinian Writers Union. As for Al-Bayader Al-Sasisi, it was one of the first weekly political magazines that was published in Jerusalem after the occupation in 1967. Its first issue was published on 1/4/1981 and was distributed throughout Palestine, Cairo, Europe and North America. At the beginning of its journey, the magazine was prevented from being distributed for three and a half years in the West Bank and Gaza Strip (1982-1985), and its distribution was limited to Jerusalem, the Golan Heights and occupied Palestine in 1948.
The Jerusalemite couple, Jack and Nada Khazmo, are activists advocating for the right of the Palestinian press. They stood before the Israeli military measures, demanded the rights of journalists, and confronted the occupation forces that were preventing the gathering of more than 10 individuals, and they defeated military censorship in the courts. Jacques Khuzmo was subjected to arrest, interrogations, threats and assaults that almost cost his life. His house was also subjected to more than sixty gunshots and an attempt to set his car on fire. His wife, Nada Khazmo, was subjected to a series of assaults, the most important of which was that the Israeli police and border guards beat her on 21/7/1988 and accused her of attempting to snatch a soldier’s weapon and arrest her. To several other assaults that almost claimed her life, including attempts to hang, run over, and stab, as well as threats and prosecution in the United States of America while she was attending a conference on publishing. Jack Youssef Khazmo passed away on Friday, 5-6-2020 AD, in the occupied city of Jerusalem, after a long struggle with illness, at the age of 69. He had three daughters, named, Lama, and Dala.
