Alaa Hlehel (b. 1974) is a Palestinian journalist, novelist, playwright, screenwriter, and translator (Arabs 48), based in Acre. Active in writing in Arabic and Hebrew. He has published 3 novels and a collection of short stories, in addition to texts published in digital platforms and various magazines.

 

a brief about his life

Alaa Hlehel was born in 1974 in the Galilee village of Jish, to a family that had been displaced from the village of Qudita in the Nakba. He completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Haifa in mass media and fine arts. In 2003, he joined the Screenwriting School in Tel Aviv. During his studies, he engaged in journalism and worked for Al-Ittihad newspaper published in Haifa. Hlehel initiated the establishment of various cultural magazines and projects and served as their editor-in-chief, such as “Tervizion” magazine and “Al-Madina” newspaper, which is a local weekly published in Haifa since 2005. His articles and texts were published in various websites and magazines, including Arab48, Fasl Al-Maqal, Haaretz, and Ynet. Banipal Magazine.

 

He was selected from the list of Arab writers under the age of forty issued by the Beirut 39 project in the UNESCO celebrations of choosing Beirut as the World Book Capital in 2009.

 

In 2010, Hlehel, in partnership with Sami Matar, founded the "Qudita" website, which is an electronic literary and cultural platform with a variety of content, to which many Palestinian and Arab writers, artists, and academics have contributed. The site monitored cultural activities organized within the Green Line, and its activity ceased in 2017. It established Qedita Books, a publishing house established with the site, and recently published the book “The Kingdom of Olives and Ashes”, a project in which 26 writers from 22 countries participated, at the initiative of the Shufrim Shtikah organization ( break the silence).

 

He is the senior editor of "Hakaya", a website for children's and boys' literature and culture.
