Information

Bashir Barghouti (1931-2000) was a Palestinian journalist and communist leader. Barghouti was born in the village of Deir Ghasana in the Ramallah governorate. He received his BA in Economics from the American University in Cairo in 1956.

in Jordan

He lived in exile in Jordan, and founded the Al-Jamahir newspaper, the main faction in the Jordanian Communist Party, and joined the General Union of Palestine Students. In 1957 the newspaper was closed down by the Jordanian authorities and Barghouti was arrested in Al-Jafr prison. When he was released in 1965, his journalistic license was denied by the Jordanian government, but he continued to write under a pseudonym. After 1967 he said he opposed the right of King Hussein of Jordan to speak on behalf of the Palestinians.

In Palestine

In 1974 he returned to the West Bank through a family reunion, and became a prominent figure in the Communist Party there. He founded Al-Fajr newspaper, which he edited from 1975-1977. In February 1977, there was a political dispute between him and the Fatah movement, and Barghouti left the editor-in-chief of Al-Fajr in February 1978 and established the Al-Talia newspaper in Jerusalem.

Barghouti was placed under house arrest by the Israelis from August 1980-1982. In 1982 the JCP branches in the West Bank were transformed into a party, and Barghouti became the General Secretary of the Popular Congress Party.

In 1987, after the Popular Congress Party joined the Palestine Liberation Organization, Barghouti was included in the Executive Committee of the PLO. Barghouti was an important figure during the first intifada, and said he formed the first popular committee. He was able to draw up an agreement between Fatah and the Popular Front. He was a key figure in the Oslo peace process.

In June 1996 he was appointed Minister of Industry in the first government of national power. In 1997 he suffered a severe stroke.
