Izz al-Din Abuelaish (in English:
Izzeldin Abuelaish) (February 3, 1955 in Jabalia camp - ) is a
Palestinian-Canadian doctor and author from Gaza. He was the first Palestinian
doctor to work in an Israeli hospital. He was active in promoting the
Israeli-Palestinian peace process. His daughters attended a peace camp with
Israeli children in the United States.
During the Israeli war on Gaza in
January 2009, his three daughters and a niece were killed by Israeli tank fire
aimed at his home. Abouleish described the killing of his daughters in a video
clip that was widely circulated around the world. The IDF initially claimed
that Dr. Abuelaish's house was targeted because it was the source of sniper
fire.
He immigrated to Canada, where he
now resides in Toronto, with his remaining children.
