Ramzi Rayhan, a distinguished professor of physics at the College of Science and former dean of the college, has played pivotal roles in the administrative and academic landscape of Birzeit University. With a career spanning over 45 years, Rayhan's journey at the university commenced with a serendipitous encounter with Hanna Nasser in 1970. Little did he anticipate that this chance meeting would anchor him to Birzeit for decades to come.
Reflecting on his enduring connection to the university, Rayhan reminisces about his childhood days in Birzeit, where he attended primary school until 1948. Like many Palestinians of his time, his family sought refuge from the occupation, nurturing a hope of eventual return. It was not until 1970 that Rayhan found himself back in Birzeit, where the institution stood as a college with a modest enrollment of merely 200 students across the first and second-year levels. Students aspiring to further their education often sought opportunities at institutions like the American University of Beirut or other universities.
Despite its humble beginnings, Rayhan witnessed and contributed to the remarkable transformation of the college into a full-fledged university. His dedication to the university's mission of development, education, and nation-building has been unwavering. Throughout his tenure, Rayhan has held key administrative positions, including vice president for planning and development, vice president for community affairs, and advisor to the president.
For Rayhan, Birzeit University embodies more than just an academic institution; it represents a legacy intertwined with his personal journey and commitment to serving his community. Through his leadership and vision, he has played an instrumental role in shaping the university's history and ensuring its continued growth and excellence.
