Gabi Andoni Baramki ( November 3, 1929 - August 30 , 2012 ) was a writer , university professor , and one of the contributors and activists in building Palestinian university education. He was born in Jerusalem on November 3, 1929 and died in 2012.

Origin

His father, Andoni Baramki, was an architect, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Athens , and supervised the construction of buildings, housing, and churches in Ramallah and Jerusalem. His mother, Evelyn, and his wife, Haifa Al-Tarazi. His children are: Hani, Sami, and Hania.

His studies

At the age of five, Dr. Baramki joined the boarding section of Birzeit School in 1934, where he learned Arabic and English , as well as Arab nationalism . In 1946, Dr. Baramki graduated from Birzeit College with a matriculation certificate.

Then, in 1950, Dr. Baramki continued his higher education at the American University of Beirut, specializing in chemistry. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in 1950 and a master’s degree in 1953. The university was at that time an incubator for an active Arab nationalist movement in which Baramki was able to get to know the pioneers of the movement. Palestinian patriotism, such as: “Wadih Haddad, Shafiq Al-Hout, George Habash, and Kamal Nasser...”

Dr. Baramki received a scholarship to study for his doctorate at McGill University in Canada (1957-1959), then returned home to work at Birzeit College.

His works and positions

In 1953, Dr. Baramki contributed to the founding of Birzeit College and also served as its dean.

After his return from McGill University, Dr. Baramki joined the team to develop Birzeit College into a university in 1972. In 1974, the president of Birzeit University, Hanna Nasser, was expelled from Palestine for 19 years by the occupying authority for political reasons, so Dr. Baramki was elected. To be president of Birzeit University. Fortunately, despite the shadow of Israeli policies of oppression, intimidation, and persecution, Birzeit University succeeded in graduating its first batch of bachelor’s degree holders in 1976. The expulsion of the former president of the university led to pressure and the university going through difficult periods that the Palestinian people had never experienced before. Thanks to Dr. Baramki’s patience and wisdom in administration and organization, the university was able to pass those periods safely.

In 1977, Dr. Baramki was one of the founders of the Palestinian Higher Education Council. In 1994, Dr. Baramki was chosen as a special advisor to the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and he served in this position for 12 years. He also worked as Secretary General of the Higher Education Council and Vice President of the Scientific Research Council and was appointed as the first president of the Quality Improvement Fund (QIF).

He was elected for 25 years as a member of the “Pagwash” Council during (1992-2002) and an active member of the “Alternative Methods” advisory group. Dr. Baramki served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Campaign, and a founding member of the Palestinian-European Academic Cooperation Program in Education (PEACE), a joint program between Palestinian universities and more than 40 European universities. Dr. Baramki was also an active member of the Board of Trustees of the Muwatin Foundation (the Palestinian Foundation for the Study of Democracy), the Board of Trustees of Birzeit University, and the Advisory Board of the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music .

Dr. Gabi passed away on Thursday, August 30, 2012.

His titles

In 1993, Dr. Baramki received the Knight Medal awarded to him by the French Ministry of Higher Education in recognition of his distinguished contributions to education.

The President of the Palestinian National Authority also awarded him the “Order of Merit and Distinction” shortly after his passing, “in recognition of his distinguished academic role in raising the status of higher education and contributing to building the first university in Palestine, and in appreciation of his giving and distinguished national contributions.”

Birzeit University established a professorship in chemistry under the name “Dr. Gabi Baramki Chair,” and announced the “Baramki Excellence Award” for graduates.
