Refaat Khaled Safadi, born on January 24, 1965, is a physician and a prominent specialist locally and internationally in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology. He is the director of the liver departments at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital and the Holy Family Hospital in Nazareth. Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine at the Hebrew University. His scientific research focuses on fatty, cirrhosis, viruses and liver cancers and develops innovations for therapeutic techniques.
His upbringing and education
Safadi grew up in the Galilee city of Nazareth, the third son in a family of six brothers and sisters. He received his primary education at Al-Halawanji School in Nazareth, and his secondary education at St. Joseph’s Seminary and High School in Nazareth, from which he graduated in 1983. As for studying medicine, he learned it at the Faculty of Medicine at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, after which he specialized in internal medicine, then in diseases of the digestive system and liver In 1993. he began working as a physician in the Hepatology Unit at Hadassah Hospital and in 2011 he became the head of the unit. His specialization includes several areas, including the field of viral hepatology, fatty liver diseases, autoimmune hepatitis in all its forms (immune hepatitis, autoimmune cholecystitis, biliary sclerosis, and others), copper (Wilson) and iron deposits (hemochromatosis), primary biliary cirrhosis Fatty liver, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, and more.
Scientific achievements
Among Prof. Safadi's most notable accomplishments, he and his team were able to achieve a major breakthrough in the study of fatty liver and cancer. His research work has been recognized and respected by professional and scientific frameworks in Israel and abroad, and the research results have been published in more than 180 scientific and medical journals around the world. He has more than 10 scientific patents registered in the United States and is under development into modern medical treatments and diagnostics. These scientific patents focus on the treatment of lipid, fiber and liver cancer. This is in addition to his social and medical activities and his contributions to spreading awareness and developing services and research for liver patients in the Arab community, the country and the world.
