convert to Islam
Sanaa Al-Sayegh's conversion to Islam from Christianity in 2007 sparked controversy. Fatah officials accused their political rivals in Hamas of kidnapping Sana al-Sayegh and forcing her to convert to Islam, a claim denied by Hamas.

Sana met her mother at the home of a Hamas official, and she told her, “Yes, God has guided me to the right path,” but the mother later claimed that her daughter Sana was forced to say so. Other sources close to the family have also claimed that Sana contacted them to indicate that she had been forced to marry a Muslim university professor.

Alaa Aklouk, a senior cleric in Gaza, said that he met with Sanaa Al-Sayegh and concluded that she had converted to Islam of her own free will, and denied allegations that she had married a Muslim man. Furthermore, Alaa said that Sana was "afraid" of telling her family about her conversion to Islam.

Hanan Matar, an activist with the Palestinian Center for Human Rights in Gaza, said that she met Sanaa Al-Sayegh, who denied that she had converted to Islam because of her marriage. She described Sana's behavior as "the behavior of a devout Muslim woman."
