Ahmad Shafeeq Al-Khatib (1926-2015) a Palestinian-Lebanese lexicographer.
his life
He was born in the village of Qubeiba, Palestine, in 1926. His father is Imam Shafiq Al-Khatib, and his mother is Amna Al-Haridi. He is married to Shirin Iranian, and he has three children from her. He received his secondary education in Arabic at government schools, and in English at the Friends School in Ramallah.
Ahmad al-Khatib lived in Lebanon since 1945, and when the catastrophe struck, he had finished his third year in the science department, so he was forced to leave his studies and work as a professor of science at the Islamic Makassed College in Sidon. He also took charge of the internal department in the college from 1949 to 1951. Later, he joined the American University of Beirut and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1956, and a Master of Arts degree in 1958.
In the period between 1964-1965, he moved to work as a scientific advisor at the publishing house of the Library of Lebanon, after which he was appointed in charge of the lexicons department.
Ahmed Shafiq Al-Khatib also held the position of Secretary of the Lions Club for more than ten years from its founding in 1960 until the mid-1970s. He was also a prominent member of the Lebanese Red Cross, and held the position of President, Vice President and Secretary General of the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo, and a member of the Arabic Language Academy in Amman. Head of the Department of Lexicography at the Library of Lebanon.
His writings
He is the author of many important books, where he practiced translation and the manufacture of dictionaries, so his works in the field of scientific, lexical and terminological authorship are known, including:
A dictionary of scientific, technical and engineering terms, issued in 1971.
Dictionary of Petroleum and Petroleum Industry Terms, issued in 1975.
Al-Mufid Dictionary, with the participation of Dr. Raja Nasr.
The Pocket Learner's Dictionary, with the participation of A.O. Versby.
He has twelve dictionaries on chemistry, geology, physics, plants, animals, biology, astronomy, satellites, computer science, nutritional sciences, mathematics, and geography, published between 1978-1994.
Al-Shihabi Dictionary of Agricultural Terminology (English-Arabic).
Hitti's New Medical Dictionary, in partnership with Dr. Youssef Hitti, was published in 1989, and a new, revised and illustrated edition was issued in 2011.

He died in Beirut on June 13, 2015, at the age of 89.

Honor him
His name was recorded among a group
of names in an honor mural located at the American University in Beirut. The
Lebanese National Committee for UNESCO also organized a ceremony honoring him
in cooperation with the Library of Lebanon Publishers and the Beirut
Translation School and under the auspices of the Prime Minister at the time,
Rafik Hariri. He was also awarded the Joseph Zaarour Medal, for the best
distinguished work in the field of dictionaries and translation, and a
commemorative shield for the School of Translation at Saint Joseph University.
