his life
His passion for writing began when he was a child, when he used to write on the walls of homes and school desks.
Al-Salmi’s heart was drawn to writing, and he had relationships with a group of Palestinian writers in Gaza. He was and still is influenced by novels, especially fantasy ones. In the year 2007 AD, Hani Al-Salmi accidentally read an announcement for a prize for young novel writers, from the A. M. Qattan Foundation. He was 27 years old at the time, and he was struck by the value of the prize, which was 5,000 US dollars. The deadline for submitting the work was two months after the announcement was issued, and it must be submitted. A distinctive dress for salami. He won first place in the award, and the next day he found his name shining in the local newspapers as the first Gazan to receive this award, competing with writers in the West Bank, the Palestinian diaspora, and the Palestinian interior.
Al-Salmi's novel was printed for the price of the award by the Foundation, and his name became circulated among Palestinian writers. He began working in civil society institutions through many projects as a social activist and youth activist. Then he began training in the field of creative writing and story writing for both categories of children and youth, and psychological support through writing. Then he worked with institutions concerned with education and culture. Hani Al-Salmi married in 2008 and has four daughters; Qamar is the eldest daughter, Sama is the second daughter, Siwar is the third daughter, and Jodi is the younger daughter. He considers them four novels, and he was able to instill a love of reading in his daughters, so much so that they often come to him to tell him that they found his name in their school’s library, and ask him to come to school to talk about some of his stories in front of their classmates. In 2014 AD, Hani Al-Salmi's living conditions began to deteriorate. He did not have the opportunity to work with any cultural or educational institutions, and people abandoned reading in this era, and some struggled to secure a living. He began his work from novelist to coffee seller. About writing in conjunction with the crisis of living, he says: “It is not permissible for me to write when I am hungry. My family needs financial income to live, and my daughters need to continue their studies.” Thus, he decided to buy his cart from one of the drinks stall owners, and he brought some household items to start working on.
