Issam Muhammad Darwish Al-Shanti (born on December 18, 1929 in Qalqilya , Palestine - died on December 1, 2012 in Ismailia , Egypt) is a Palestinian historian and one of the experts in manuscript verification. [1] He is considered one of the most prominent figures in Arab heritage. He was director of the Institute of Arab Manuscripts at the League of Arab States in 1989. . He is called the "Sheikh of Arabic Manuscripts Catalogers" and the "Sheikh of Arab Indexers."
His upbringing and educational attainment
Issam Muhammad Darwish Al-Shanti was born on December 18, 1929 in his hometown of Qalqilya in the Tulkarm district at the time. He completed his basic education in the schools of his hometown of Qalqilya in 1944 , then continued his secondary education at the Khadoori Institute in Tulkarm , where he completed secondary school at the institute in 1948 .
In 1948, he joined the Faculty of Arts at Cairo University in the Department of Arabic Language, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Arts in 1953 , and in 1967 he obtained a postgraduate diploma from the Institute of Arab Research and Studies in Cairo.
Working life
In 1954, he worked in the Jordanian Ministry of Social Affairs in Jerusalem , then in 1957 he worked as a teacher for several years at the Higher Teachers’ Institute in Tripoli, Libya.
Since 1967, he worked at the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts of the Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Science at the League of Arab States in Cairo , Tunisia , and Kuwait . In 1989 , he became director of the institute, then retired in the same year to work after that as an expert and member of the institute’s advisory council until his death in 2012. .

Honoring him
On April 4, 2013, Issam Al-Shanti was honored by the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts at the League of Arab States, and his name was also awarded the title of “Heritage Personality of the Year” for 2013 by the Institute of Arab Manuscripts and the Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Science.
His death
Essam El-Shanty died on December 1, 2012 in the city of Ismailia in Egypt , and was buried there.
