Rami Abu Shahab (born July 25, 1974) is an academic writer and critic specializing in literary criticism , cultural studies, and post-colonial discourse . He holds a PhD from the Institute of Arab Research and Studies in Cairo in 2012 with first-class distinction, a master's degree from Hashemite University in Jordan with honors, and a BA in Arabic Language and Literature from Mutah University in Jordan.
His book (The Precipice and Deception in Contemporary Arab Criticism) played a major role in activating the field of post-colonial studies in Arab criticism, as the book is considered one of the first books that researched or presented the theory in a systematic manner in Arab criticism, as the book was published in 2013 , and then studies in the field of post-colonial studies followed. His book (The Last Passage: A Palestinian Diaspora Narrative) also played a role in rooting and launching diaspora studies in Arab literature , in addition to his introduction to shock literature in Arab literature through his book entitled (The Book of the Victim: The Literature of Shock - Trauma).
The critic's research and studies vary to include several fields of knowledge and critical approaches, in addition to his central contributions in the field of post-colonial discourse, diaspora studies, and cultural criticism, in addition to reviews of world cinema, folk tales and heritage, in addition to intellectual and critical reviews of many books and studies. He is a member of the jury of the Al-Multaqa Prize for the Arab Short Story in Kuwait 2019. He writes a weekly article in Al- Quds Al-Arabi newspaper in London since 2014 , and has participated in conferences and seminars in the United States, Cambridge University in England, Algeria, Egypt, Kuwait, Jordan, Qatar, Tunisia, and others.
Awards
Sheikh Zayed Book Award 2014 for his book “The President and the Deceiver” Post-Colonial Discourse in Contemporary Arab Criticism - Theory and Application. The scientific committee’s justifications for winning stated: The book is a new step in the field of monitoring the impact of post-colonial studies on the map of contemporary Arab criticism .
