Adnan Tarabsha: Palestinian Playwright, Artist, and Theatre Historian
Adnan Tarabsha is a Palestinian artist, writer, and playwright from the Palestinian territories occupied in 1948. He has built an extensive career in theatre, contributing as a playwright, adaptor, actor, director, and producer. His works have been staged locally and internationally, reflecting his longstanding involvement in Palestinian theatrical expression.
Theatrical Works and Musical Productions
Tarabsha has written and adapted dozens of plays throughout his career. His notable works include Al-Ukash (1996), Mughannat Safar (2019), and Zahrat Al-Aqahwan (2023). His musical production Tuyur La Tamut (Birds That Don't Die) was announced for a premiere in July 2026.
Books and Documentation of Palestinian Theatre
In September 2021, Tarabsha published his third book, Hikayat Al-Kashif, Al-Masrah, and Al-'Aba'in. The publication received attention from media outlets, including Fusha and Arab48, for documenting decades of Palestinian theatrical experience dating back to 1973 and preserving practical knowledge of the development of Palestinian theatre.
In 2026, he published his fourth book, Hiya Laysa Majrad Rasala (It Is Not Just a Letter). The book documents the history of the Palestinian Al-Hakawati Theatre Company through letters addressed to his fiancée, Linda, who has remained his life partner.
Al-Hakawati Theatre and Cultural Contributions
Tarabsha is closely associated with Al-Hakawati Theatre in Jerusalem, which he co-founded while studying theatre and geography at university. Since the 1980s, he has participated in numerous local and international festivals, presenting theatrical productions to diverse audiences and contributing to the visibility of Palestinian theatre.
Film, Television, and Acting
In addition to his theatrical career, Tarabsha has participated in several films and television series as an actor and screenwriter. His screenwriting achievements include an award for Best Screenwriter for The State of the Dead.
Theatre Management and Artistic Initiatives
Tarabsha founded several theatres and musical groups, undertaking various responsibilities, including general management, playwriting, directing, and acting. His work has included involvement with the Theatre of the Deaf and Maraya. He also served as general manager of Al-Midan Theatre in Haifa from 2012 to 2015.
