Sonia Nimr studied the politics and history of the Middle East in Palestine. During her studies, she was arrested and sent to an Israeli prison. In prison she began writing, especially for books for children. She subsequently moved to England and completed her doctorate at the University of Exeter. While working as an education officer at museums in London she continued to write and translate books. She has since written 16 children’s books. She first received recognition for Little Piece of Ground, written with Elizabeth Laird in 2003. The story of the occupied West Bank as seen through the eyes of a 12-year old boy was written in English. It was translated into Arabic, many European languages and Japanese and was nominated for the CILIP Carnegie Medal in the UK and included in the IBBY Honour List 2004.  Also in English she wrote in 2007 Ghaddar the Ghoul and other Palestinian Stories, a collection of ten magical and humorous tales. She has written folk stories in colloquial Arabic, Qisah Awalha khayal wa Akherha Khyal (Story that begins and ends with lies, 2012) and a young adult novel, Rihlat Ajeeba Fi Al Bilad Al Ghareeba (Wondrous journeys in strange lands, 2013), which received the Al-Etisalat Award for Arabic Children’s Literature at the Sharjah International Book Fair and was included on the IBBY Honour List 2014.
