Under the patronage of HRH Princess Dina Mired, Director General of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation, Maha Naim Kalaji, a cancer patient, launched her book ‘Rihlat Muwajaha’ (‘Journey of Confrontations’) at a celebration organized by the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) on January 8, 2011 at the Hussein Cultural Center/Greater Amman Municipality.
Throughout the 136 pages of the book, Maha Kalaji discusses her journey with cancer and her personal battle with the disease which began 17 years ago, at a time when the King Hussein Cancer Center had not yet been established, and which led her to seek treatment abroad. ‘Rihlat Muwajaha’ is a unique book which reflects Maha Kalaji’s courage to break all barriers to tell her story and heighten the resolve of others – both healthy and ill – through sheer will-power. Kalaji’s book is aimed at the general public and people who have faced a similar experience. Proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the King Hussein Cancer Foundation.
During the celebration, Princess Dina thanked the author, all those in attendance and supporters of the event, adding: “The fight against cancer requires extreme courage, and I salute Maha Kalaji for her solid faith and for her determination to write this book, making her one of the few Arab women who dared to break the barrier of silence and publicly share details of her disease and treatment”.
At the event, Maha Kalaji said “One of my close friends, Kayed Hashem, offered to document my experience with cancer. Although I agreed, I felt that the time was not right. In 2009, I had a liver operation and I awoke post-surgery thoroughly convinced that the time to write my experience had come. I began recording my journey with cancer in January 2010 and my friend, the writer Mohammad Salam Jomian, composed it”.
Kalaji added “I attempted through the book to stir cancer patients on several levels: firstly, in faith which played a major role in my personal experience and was a key to my success; secondly, in will-power, which comes as a result of faith; and finally, in awareness and consulting doctors at the first sign of something unnatural in the body”.
In 2011, Maha Kalaji plans to release ‘Journey of Confrontations’ the English version of the book. Proceeds of the sale of both the Arabic and English books will be donated to the King Hussein Cancer Foundation.
The book launching celebration was emceed by Rana Sultan and was attended by a number of their Royal Highnesses, Ministers, Ambassadors and many distinguished guests.
