Palestinian-American composer and musician Ramzy Suleiman By age 22, emerging soul artist Ramzy Suleiman had already composed and produced his first CD, "The News Caters Home" with his band Ramzy and the Newscasters. The sounds, according to The Washington Post, "can be rousing, tender, mathematically complex or as simple as water flowing. A Berklee College of Music graduate and recipient of the Berklee Achievement Scholarship, Suleiman plays several instruments including the piano, clarinet, and saxophone.
By the time he was 13, Suleiman was performing in churches and other venues and by the end of his teens he was the singer and front man for the funk band, Joppa.
Suleiman was born in Washington, D.C in 1987 to an American mother and a Palestinian father from the West Bank town of El Bireh. As a child, Suleiman spent every summer in Palestine where he says he had some of his "greatest and most shocking memories. "The family network and the hospitality were unparalleled but that was coupled with the shocking and paralyzing experiences of checkpoints and having to deal with soldiers of an occupying force on a daily basis. These experiences impacted Suleiman's music and inspired him to write songs about social consciousness.
As a Palestinian-American musician, Suleiman feels that lyrically he "has a unique opportunity to tell the story of what is happening in Palestine. The songs confront issues uncommon in American music; from checkpoints to the siege on Gaza, Suleiman attempts to encourage a dialogue about the Israeli occupation amongst his listeners.
Suleiman attributes this to his early exposure to eastern instruments such as the oud and the percussion. From the shores of America's East Coast to the heart of Africa and the Middle East, Suleiman's travels have not only enriched his musical talent but have also made him an ambassador for cross-cultural understanding. A musician on the rise, Suleiman says he wants "to continue making music that builds bridges between cultures. In early 2010 Suleiman was commissioned to score the documentary " Pelotero" that tells the story of Dominican baseball players.
