Muhammad Ali Taha (born in 1941 in Miar) is a Palestinian novelist and playwright, writer of children's literature and satirical essay, and a Palestinian political activist from the Galilee. He has published a variety of literature, and won several awards.
His upbringing and education
He was born in 1941 in the village of Mayar in the Galilee region in northern Palestine, and took refuge with his family after the occupation and destruction of the village in the 1948 war at the hands of the Zionist forces to the village of Kabul. He passed the primary school in Kabul and secondary school in Kafr Yasif in 1960. He studied Arabic literature and history at Haifa University and obtained his first university degree in 1976. He worked as a teacher of Arabic literature at the Arab Orthodox College in Haifa for 25 years.
His political and journalistic activities
He became involved in political work in the ranks of the Israeli Communist Party in the late seventies and was a member of the party between 1977 and 1992, and was a member of its Central Committee.
He headed the "National Accord" committee for the Arab masses at home, and was prosecuted and arrested several times, and in 1983 the Israeli authorities confiscated his collection of stories "A Rose for My Eyes Hafiza" and arrested him.
From 1982 to 1990, he worked as a cultural editor for the Haifa newspaper Al Ittihad, which was issued by the Communist Party. In the years 1990-1992, he was editor-in-chief of Al-Jadeed magazine.
In 1987, he co-founded the Palestinian Arab Writers Union in Israel and was elected its president in 1991, and he is the responsible editor for the "48" magazine, which was issued by the Arab Writers Union.
In 1998, he was elected head of the Committee to Commemorate the Nakba and Resilience, which carried out extensive activities in the country to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Palestinian people’s catastrophe and culminated in the March of Return, which headed from Nazareth to Saffuriyya, in which thousands participated.
He writes a weekly article in Al-Ittihad newspaper on Sunday morning, and one in Al-Hayat Al-Jadida newspaper published in Ramallah on Monday morning.
His literary works
Muhammad Ali Taha wrote short stories, novels and theater, as well as children’s literature, and his writings express the Palestinian rural environment, and the daily reality of ordinary people in it. His stories have been translated into several languages, including English, German, Italian, Hebrew, Russian, French, Polish, and Bulgarian. .
Critics consider him a pioneer of the Palestinian story and one of the most prominent short story writers in the Arab world, and they called him the “Dean of the Palestinian Story,” “The Satirist,” “The Writer Who Smells Palestine in His Story,” and “The Pioneer of the Palestinian Story.”
