Muhammad Farid Khurshid al-Adnani (March 26, 1903 - August 5, 1981) was a Palestinian poet, short story writer, and linguist. He was born in Jenin and studied there, Gaza and Tulkarem, then moved to the American University in Beirut and obtained his degree in 1927. He practiced education in a number of Arab countries, and ended his educational life as a teacher at the Syrian University, then the University of Aleppo. He changed his surname from “Khurshid” to “Al-Adnani” in 1936. He wrote collections of poetry, studies, linguistic dictionaries, and stories. He died in Beirut.

Muhammad Farid Abdullah Khurshid Al-Adnani was born on March 26, 1903 / Dhu al-Hijjah 27, 1320 in Jenin and grew up there. He studied elementary and middle school in its schools and in Tulkarem, Gaza and Damascus, where his father used to move because of his work as governor of Jenin during the Ottoman era, then to Tulkarem, Gaza, Jerusalem, Damascus and Sidon. Muhammad al-Adnani graduated from high school at the School of Arts in Saida in 1920, then joined the Faculty of Medicine in Beirut and studied there for four years before transferring to the Faculty of Arts at the American University of Beirut, from which he graduated in 1927.

He taught at the Central High School Teachers’ House in Baghdad, An-Najah National College in Nablus from 1931 to 1933, and Al-Rashidiyah College in Jerusalem from 1933 to 1942, then he was appointed director of Al-Makassed College in Sidon for three years.

The British Mandate authorities arrested him three times during his stay in Jerusalem, accusing him in one of them of killing the director of the Palestinian Museum in Jerusalem. Then she exiled him to Jaffa in 1942, and imposed house arrest on him there until the end of World War II in 1945, and he taught during that period at the Amiriya School in Jaffa.

In the days of the Nakba 1948, and in May 1948 he was hospitalized in the city of Jerusalem, then he sought refuge in the city of Zarqa in Jordan, and after a short stay of no more than six months, he left for Syria, and resided in Damascus for a period during which he taught at its university and at the teachers’ house, then he went He moved to Aleppo, where he taught the Arabic language at its university, and his name became famous in the cultural and literary circles there.

He was appointed president of the Al-Urwa al-Wuthqa literary association at the American University of Beirut, and president of the Palestinian National Union in the governorates of Idlib and Aleppo during the union between Egypt and Syria.

Al-Adnani died on August 5, 1981 / Shawwal 5, 1401 in Beirut, and was buried in the Martyrs' Cemetery there.
