Farouk Wadi was born in Ramallah in 1949. He has published one collection of short stories and three novels.
Only a few short stories have been translated English and French.
As a Palestinian author living in exile since 1967 Farouk Wadi had for a long time to rely on his memory an imaginative power when writing about his distant homeland. Through the Oslo Agreement of 1993 things changed in so far as it allowed for some Palestinians living in exile to return home again or, at least, to visit their home country. Farouk Wadi visited places of his childhood and youth, Ramallah and al-Bireh, in 1995 and 1996. His autobiographical novel "Manazil al-qalb" ("Houses of heart"), published in 1997, is the story of the impressions and thoughts he had during his stays and a literary testimony of his homecoming after almost thirty years in exile.
On extended journeys through Ramallah and al-Bireh, representing the novel’s central theme, the author unfolds memories of his childhood and youth coming up in the sight of familiar streets, places, shops, cafés, cinemas. However, the author does not limit the narrator’s perspective to the personal level. The narrator also has a closer look at public and political events as well as social and economic developments taking place in both cities during the fifties and sixties.
While the first years after the foundation of Israel in 1948 are characterised by poverty and numerous refugees living in tents, in the sixties a certain economic development can be observed resulting from the oil production in the Gulf region and the emigration of Palestinian workers accompanying this. Concentrating on far-reaching political events, for example the Six Day War in 1967, Farouk Wadi relates the political atmosphere and the different political opinions of the population.
Returning home to his place of birth after almost thirty years of absence, Farouk Wadi makes the painful experience that he hardly meets those people he was familiar with in the past. Thus, he feels like a stranger in his home country.
He lives in Amman where he works for the Palestine cultural ministry and also as editor-in-chief of the magazine
"Samed al-Iqtisadi".
