Raad started his photography journey in 1891 and set out from inside a studio he set up on Jaffa Street in Jerusalem outside the wall. As an official Ottoman photographer, documenting the First World War was his first documentary project. During that period, he was close to the Ottoman military ruler, Jamal Pasha, which enabled him to move easily between Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. During 6 decades, Raad has photographed daily life in Palestine and in Jerusalem in particular, and many scenes of the life of the upper classes, and his photos represent the other side of what was absent from the images of foreign photographers, who roamed Palestine, where his photos formed the true pattern of Palestinian existence and life, and an alternative to the Western colonial style.
