Tawfeq Abu Khater (born in 1934) is
a Palestinian/Lebanese businessman based in Monaco.
Abu Khater was born to Palestinian
parents in the city of Tiberias, and his father was the owner of a hotel in
Tiberias. In 1948 the family moved to Syria and then to Lebanon where Tawfiq
completed his education and moved to the UAE to work with Royal Dutch Shell,
after which he became a special economic advisor to the ruler of Ras Al
Khaimah, Sheikh Saqr Al Qasimi.
In 1998, Abu Khater bought the
Louis Carlo Hotel from Luz Hotels Holding Company for an undisclosed price and
renamed it the Monte Carlo Grand Hotel. In 2004, the hotel was acquired by
Fairmont Hotels & Resorts for €215 million, and is now Fairmont Monte
Carlo.
In April 2011, Abukhater bought
seven InterContinental hotels, including the InterContinental Carlton Cannes
and InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam, for $643 million. He had a net worth of
$5.6 billion in 2014.
