The Palestinian pioneer Yusra Ibrahim Al-Barbari was born in the Al-Daraj neighborhood, Gaza City, on April 15, 1923 AD. She received her primary education at the Gaza Girls Primary School, then completed her secondary education at the Schmidt School in Jerusalem, then joined the Faculty of Arts, History Department, at King Fouad I University in Egypt (Cairo today), from which she graduated in 1949. She was the first university girl from the Gaza Strip. I submitted my master's thesis entitled "The Struggle and Struggle of the Palestinian People." She is fluent in three languages: Arabic, English and French.

Since her childhood, the youth of Gaza participated in the demonstrations against the British Mandate, which called for canceling the Balfour Declaration, stopping Jewish immigration, stopping the confiscation of Palestinian lands, and stopping settlement activity.

She began her career as a teacher; She became a social, political and educational leader in the Gaza Strip. This qualified her to be one of eight Palestinian women, among a thousand women from all over the world who were collectively nominated to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.

She participated as a member of the Palestinian delegation to the United Nations in 1963; She was a member of the first Palestinian Legislative Council in the 1960s, and a member of the Palestinian National Council since 1964. She represented Palestine in many Arab and international conferences and forums.

She is a member of the founding committee of the Palestinian Women’s Union. She then became president of the union in Gaza from 1964 until her death in 2009. She participated in the first founding conference of the General Union of Palestinian Women in Jerusalem in 1964 AD.


She was honored and decorated with the “Jerusalem Star Medal” by President Mahmoud Abbas at the opening of the “Fifth Conference of the General Union of Palestinian Women” in 2009, in recognition of her pioneering role and her national and educational contributions. She died on May 13, 2009 AD.
