Hajj Taher Darwish al-Masri was born in Nablus and became a prominent public figure and merchant, a member of the municipal council, and one of the leading figures of the Defense Party in Nablus. Newspapers reported his donation to An-Najah National College during its 25th anniversary celebration in 1942. He instructed his son, Hikmat al-Masri, to take the stage and announce the donation of five hundred pounds. The venue erupted in applause, prompting the poet Wadi' al-Bustani to spontaneously recite:
date
Al-Tahir al-Masri, the pearl of speech
What Hakam said was the final word.
The young man was generous, and generosity was in his nature.
He marched in the procession of the army of the noble ones
Hajj Taher then announced his donation of one hundred for each of the two houses, and donations poured in, so the poet spontaneously recited:
Good news of "success"! Long live science and literature!
Its buildings were erected, by God, O Arabs!
