Talal Rabhi Abdullah Shahwan (born May 28, 1968) is a Palestinian chemist and university professor . He was appointed President of Birzeit University starting August 1, 2023.
His life
Talal Shahwan was born on May 28, 1968 in Jordan to a Palestinian family from the town of Habla in Qalqilya Governorate . He obtained his high school diploma in the science branch from Al-Saadia Secondary School in 1986 in Qalqilya .
Shahwan studied engineering at Birzeit University, but the Israeli occupation's closure of the university during the first Palestinian Intifada prevented him from completing his studies. He moved to Turkey and obtained a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the Middle East Technical University in 1994. He later obtained his master's degree in 1997 and his doctorate in 2000 in chemistry from Bilkent University in Turkey . He worked as a teacher at Bilkent University in Turkey between 1995 and 2002, then moved to work at the Izmir Institute of Technology until 2008.
He started working at Birzeit University on September 1, 2008, and was promoted to the rank of Professor of Chemistry in 2012. He served as Head of the Chemistry Department at the Faculty of Science at Birzeit University for one year, then as Dean of Graduate Studies and Head of the Scientific Research Committee between 2013 and 2018. He also served as Vice President for Academic Affairs.
On June 12, 2023, Hanna Nasir, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Birzeit University, announced his decision to appoint Talal Shahwan, effective August 1, 2023, as President of Birzeit University, succeeding Bishara Doumani, following his resignation.
In 2022, Stanford University ranked him among the top 2% of the most cited scientists in the world in his fields and branches. He has more than 41 scientific publications and articles.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas amended Decree No. (9) of 2016 establishing the Palestinian International Cooperation Agency on June 11, 2024, adding a Board of Directors to the Agency. He later issued Decision No. (51) of 2024 appointing him as a member of the Board starting from June 23, 2024.
