Information
Muhammad Ahmad Muhammad Hussein has been the Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories since July 2006 when he was appointed by Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to succeed Ikrima Sabri , who was dismissed from his position by Abbas for involving himself too heavily in political affairs. Before becoming Mufti of Jerusalem, Hussein was the director of Al-Aqsa Mosque , and was considered a politically moderate figure. Three months after his appointment to the position of Grand Mufti, however, on May 8, 2013, he was arrested by the Israeli police, and its spokesman stated that the reason for the arrest was his interrogation about his connection to a fight between Palestinians and Israelis outside Al-Aqsa Mosque, and he was released after several hours.
