Born in Jerusalem in 1842; became Grand Mufti of Jerusalem in the 1860s and remained in that post for more than 40 years until his death; fought Jewish immigration and agricultural settlement, incl. urging the Ottoman authorities to expel or at least harass Jewish immigrants who try to purchase land; also headed a commission set up by local notables in Jerusalem in 1897 to scrutinize applications for transfer of land to Jews, effectively stopping land sales in the Jerusalem area for a few years; father of Haj Amin Al-Husseini and Kamel Al-Husseini; died in 1908 (his son Kamel took over as Mufti).
