The Palestinian delegation participating in the Arab Youth and Junior Chess Championship for males and females won two gold medals in the tournament hosted by the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
Thus, the Palestinian delegation was able to obtain second place in the tournament, in terms of the results achieved by its players in the various participating age groups, where the champion, Iman Sawan, was crowned with the gold medal in the age group under 14 years for females, two rounds before the end, after she won all the matches she played, This is considered something unusual in the game, as champion Muhammad Sidr was crowned with the gold medal for males in the same age group before the end of a round, and he had previously won two gold medals in the Arab Chess Championship for the years 2017 and 2019, and a gold medal for the Arab World Chess Championship for the year 2018, in addition to a bronze medal in the Arab Championship. In the same context, Vice President of the Chess Federation and Chairman of the Championship’s Technical Committee, Khaled Ezz El-Din, said: “I congratulate our champions Iman and Muhammad on this victory, which is a historic achievement that has never happened before in the history of Palestinian chess since its founding, through which they were able to raise the name of Palestine in the world.” This regional competition ranks second in it after Iraq.”
He added: “This victory proves the strong will of our heroes, and the tremendous efforts of the workers in the Palestinian Chess Federation, led by the Federation’s president, Bashar Al-Masry, who had a major role in overcoming all obstacles and difficulties and developing the game on the local scene,” expressing his pride in the achievements he is achieving. Palestinian youth every day in all sports.
For his part, member of the Chess Federation and head of the Palestinian delegation to the tournament, Hassan Yassin, congratulated the Palestinian champions Iman and Muhammad on winning two gold medals in the tournament, expressing at the same time his thanks and appreciation to all members of the technical and administrative team who played a role in this Palestinian brilliance.
He pointed out the importance of the role played by the federation by supporting local participation in Arab and international tournaments in order to increase contact with international players, hone skills, and thus obtain more experience, which yielded results and contributed to more successes for the Palestinian champions.
On the other hand, champion Iman Sawan expressed her joy at this coronation, saying: “This coronation came after a long effort and effort. Chess is a game that requires focus, learning, and mental clarity. Thanks to God, I was able to win and succeed, and I dedicate this success to my family and the Palestinian Federation for the game, which... During which I was able to raise the name of my beloved country, Palestine, in chess.”
Champion Muhammad Sidr said: “This victory did not come easily, and achieving championships always requires continuous effort, support and encouragement, which I got through my family. The Palestinian Federation also helped me a lot through foreign tournaments that contributed to my development, by competing with players from High standards, which had a great impact on my career in the game.”
The Palestinian delegation participating in the tournament included 11 male and female players from the West Bank and Gaza Strip, headed by Palestinian Federation member Hassan Yassin, and accompanied by coach Nidal Ahmed.
It is noteworthy that the Arab Youth and Junior Chess Championship for males and females is being held for the first time in 21 years in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and is organized by the Arab Chess Federation, which is one of the most important supporters of Palestinian chess.
