Tayeb Abd al-Rahim, whose full name is Tayyab Abd al-Rahim Mahmoud Abd al-Halim (1943 in Anabta - March 18, 2020 in Cairo ), is a Palestinian politician . He assumed the position of Secretary-General of the Palestinian Presidency . He is a former member of the Central Committee of the Fatah movement , and one of the founders of the Palestinian National Authority .
Growing up and educational attainment
In 1943, Tayyab Abd al-Rahim Mahmoud Abd al-Halim was born in the town of Anabta, east of Tulkarm Governorate , to a Palestinian family. His father was the Palestinian poet Abd al-Rahim Mahmoud . He received his school education and joined Al-Azhar University in 1962, from which he obtained a bachelor’s degree in commerce .
Political and military life
During his studies at Al-Azhar University , he assumed the presidency of the Palestine Students Union in Cairo in 1966. He was among the first batch of the Fatah movement who enrolled in the Military Academy in Nanjing , China .
After his return, he became the General Political Commissar of the Revolutionary Forces and then became director of Sawt al-Asifa Radio in the period 1969-1970, then director of the Liberation Organization Radio 1973-1975.
He was appointed Ambassador of the Palestine Liberation Organization to China , and assumed the task of representing the PLO in Egypt and Yugoslavia , and later the Ambassador of the Palestine Liberation Organization to Jordan until 1995. Abdel Rahim has been a member of the Palestinian National Council since 1977, and a member of the Revolutionary Council of the Fatah movement since 1980 and also Member of the Fatah Central Committee since 1988. He participated in the Oslo Accords and is considered one of the founders of the Palestinian National Authority. He returned with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat to the Palestinian territories , and was entrusted with the duties of Palestinian presidential affairs in 1993 and continued in the position until his death.
He was elected a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council after the Palestinian general elections in 1996, where he obtained 10,363 votes in the Tulkarm Governorate constituency, representing the Fatah movement .
During his life, he headed the Dialogue Committee with Palestinian opposition groups in 1996, the National Committee to Investigate Corruption in 1997, and also headed the election campaign for President Mahmoud Abbas, in addition to chairing the National Committee to Investigate Negligence in Confronting Outlaw Militias in the Gaza Strip in 2007.
Death
On March 18, 2020, Al-Tayeb Abdel Rahim died after a struggle with illness in the Egyptian capital, Cairo
Achievements and Awards
Medals
On 22 December 1989, the President of Socialist Federal Yugoslavia awarded him the Order of the Yugoslav Flag with Honour; For his services to developing and strengthening peaceful cooperation and friendly relations between the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the State of Palestine.
In 1994, King Hussein bin Talal of Jordan awarded him the Order of Independence, First Class, in appreciation of the good qualities that characterized him.
December 11, 2007, the President of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, awarded him the Order of the Palestinian Star of Honor , highest class, for his tireless struggle, integrity, commitment, and dedication to carrying out the tasks entrusted to him throughout the course of the revolution and the Palestinian National Authority, and his perseverance in performing his duties in serving the causes of the Palestinian people and their national goals.
December 14, 2011, Minister Sergei Stepashin , Chairman of the Oversight and Accounting Authority and President of the Imperial Orthodox Society, awarded him the Russian Medal of Honor, in recognition of his efforts in strengthening the existing historical friendly relations between Russia and Palestine .
On January 20, 2016, Chinese President Xi Jinping awarded him the Medal of the Award for Outstanding Contributions to Sino-Arab Friendship; In recognition of the outstanding contributions he made to strengthening relations between the Palestinian and Chinese peoples and ways to develop them, Mr. Boutros Ghali, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, was among the 10 Arab figures who worked to improve Arab-Chinese relations
