Irfan Aref Shahîd was born in Nazareth, Palestine on January 15, 1926 – and died in Washington DC, November 9, 2016. He was born as Irfan Aref Kawar, is a researcher in the field of Oriental Studies. From 1982 until his death, he was a former professor at Georgetown University. Where he was a professor of Arabic language and Islamic literature. Biography
Irfan Shahid was born in Nazareth, occupied Palestine, to an Arab Christian family. He left in 1946 to study at St John's College, Oxford, where he learned Greco-Roman history. He studied under the famous historian Sherwin-White.
He received his PhD from Princeton University in Arabic and Islamic Studies. His doctoral work was entitled "Ancient Islam and Poetry". This research of Irfan Shahid focused primarily on three main areas: the Greco-Roman region, especially the Byzantine Empire, where it met with the Arab and Islamic civilization in the late antiquity and the beginning of the Middle Ages, and illuminated Islamic studies, especially the Qur’an and Arabic literature, especially Arabic poetry classic.
