Eleventh grade student Akram Osama Jamal Sobeih from Kafr Rai, south of Jenin, believes that every Palestinian who wins an international award is a messenger for Palestine and its cause, contributing to raising its name and proving that the Palestinians are a people worthy of having an entity and a state.
Sobeih won the gold medal in the Science and Technology Festival competition in Tunisia this month, assuring “Safa” that his victory and every creative Palestinian’s victory is an affirmation of Palestine’s presence on the map of scientific research and technological progress and a continuation of the challenge it faces despite the presence of the occupation and attempts to prevent us from creating and developing our society. .
About the competition, Sobeih points out that it was characterized by linguistic and cultural diversity and was in Arabic, English, French, Spanish and Hindi due to the diversity of the participants globally, and the ages of the participants were between 14-24 years in various fields between engineering and renewable energy, all the way to medicine and physics.
On the first day, there was preparation for installing the projects, presenting them on the second day to the specialized judges to evaluate them, and issuing the judgment on the sixth day. This included parallel competitions for children and challenge competitions for university students.
He adds, on the sixth day, there was a ceremony announcing the results in the presence of the Governor of Monastir State, the Tunisian Minister of Communications, and the President of the Tunisian Society for the Future of Science and Technology, where they gave motivating speeches to the youth, talking about the impact of scientific research on the development of the region, before my name was announced as the first winner.
Akram considers this victory the culmination of three years of international participation representing the State of Palestine in scientific forums, as this participation came after participation in Egypt, Jordan, the United States, and other local competitions.
Innovative student
Regarding his technical project, Akram says that it consists of using artificial intelligence to understand the patterns of electrical activity in the brain accompanying movements to control prosthetic limbs, which is characterized by enabling people with disabilities to control their prosthetic limbs with near-natural performance.
It also saves 98% of the cost of equipment, and can be developed in the future to be used by healthy people to control devices through thoughts, such as moving a car just by thinking about it, and in the medical field to monitor mental illnesses.
He noted that his project is currently receiving support from the Supreme Council for Creativity and Excellence to implement it on the ground.
Find coverage for trip expenses:
Sobeih points out that when he heard about the competition and decided to compete in it and his application was accepted, he faced the problem of providing travel expenses to Tunisia, and this presented a major dilemma for him, as he approached several institutions in Palestine, but no one paid attention to it.
He added: A whole month and I and my colleague Raghad Shtayyeh from Nablus were searching for someone to cover our travel expenses to no avail, until correspondence occurred between us and the Supreme Council for Creativity and Excellence affiliated with the Palestinian Presidency, which welcomed our participation and support of our projects, and after evaluating the contributions from the Council’s specialized work committees, we were Nominate my project to receive funding to participate, and other projects that applied from Palestine received funding to develop them locally.
He noted that his father had to travel with him at his own expense, as the coverage he obtained was for his travel expenses only without an accompaniment, which placed a burden on his family.
Sobeih called for greater support for creativity in Palestine, noting that financial obstacles prevent many creative people from developing their ideas and highlighting their creativity.
