1960-2001, Balata camp Hamas leader in West Bank. Rose to prominence as an Islamist student leader at al-Najah; early leader of Hamas, deported to Marj al-Zahur in Dec92, & became spokesman of Hamas delegation to dialogue with PA & major organiser of Hamas pol activities in the West Bank. Spent 5 years in Israeli jails, two in PA custody. Released in late 2000; but murdered 31 Jul 2001 from an Israeli helicopter missile strike on his office in Nablus
