Fawzi al-Qutb, a Palestinian explosives maker and expert, participated in the 1936 revolution and played a pivotal role during the 1947-1948 war.

 

His birth and upbringing

Fawzi Namik al-Qutb was born in 1917 in Damascus, where his father worked as an accountant in the finances of the Ottoman Empire. He completed the primary stage at the Rashidiya School in Jerusalem, continued his studies at Terra Santa College, and then worked as an employee at the British government printing press. He was fluent in English since his youth for his work in the British printing press, and he also mastered the Turkish language about his Turkish mother, and he was fond of dismantling and reassembling things. He was described by the American historian J. Bowyer Bell that he did not look like an Arab at all, as he was very tall, blond, and had green eyes.

 

Together with his comrades, Subhi Abi Gharbia (brother of Bahjat Abu Gharbia), and Daoud Alami, he established a guerrilla group during the 1936 revolution, and they planned and executed a number of guerrilla operations in the Jewish neighborhoods, such as throwing bombs and burning warehouses and factories in them.

 

Fawzi participated in a number of battles in 1936, including the Battle of Balaa on August 10, the Battle of Asira al-Shamaliah on August 17, the Battle of Wadi Arara on August 20, and the Battle of Ain Dor on the 26th of the same month.

When his friend Sami al-Ansari was martyred, he carried out an operation in which he killed a British policeman, and another policeman followed him in Bab al-Amud. The British authorities tracked him down, accusing him of killing a number of British and Jews, and when the pursuit intensified, he left Jerusalem in disguise to Iraq and participated in the Rashid Ali Al-Kilani revolution in 1941, then moved to Astana, and checked with the Mufti Hajj Amin Al-Husseini, who sent him to Germany, where he received several military courses, and was trained in He prepared explosives and mines, and worked on the Arab Radio, which was broadcasting from Germany with the Iraqi journalist and media personality Younis Bahri.

 

Returning to Jerusalem

Later he returned to Jerusalem and met with Abdul Qader Al-Husseini and the Alpha Arab Destruction Squad, which trained young people to prepare explosives and mines, and had the greatest credit for the bombing and destruction that took place in Jerusalem after the partition decision in 1947, and among these works: blowing up Hassolil Street and the Palestine Post in February 1, 1948, the Ben Yehuda Street bombings, the Mekor Haim settlement on March 13, 1948, the Montefiore neighborhood, the Kfar Etzion caravan, the Qastal road, the Hadassah caravan, the Nabi Yaakov settlement, the bombing of the Jewish Agency carried out by Anton Daoud, and the blowing up of the railway line Between Jerusalem and Jaffa. He remained in Jerusalem until the setback of 1967, so he left for Damascus and opened a translation office. He was fluent in languages besides Arabic, English, Turkish, German and a little Italian.
