Palestine. He is a member of the Palestinian Arab Congress, which is the
representative council for the Palestinian people during the time of the
British Mandate, and the father of the journalist Palestinian Issa Sabbagh.
his biography
Khalil Sabbagh was born in 1880 to
the well-known Christian Sabbagh family in the city of Tulkarem. He received
his education in the schools of the city of Tulkarem, and after that he studied
at the Faculty of Law. After graduating from the college, he opened a law
office for him in the city of Tulkarem, to become, after a short period of
time, the most prominent lawyer in the city.
With the events of World War I in
the Palestine region in 1914, Khalil Sabbagh went to Brazil, as did many
Palestinians at that time, and he married there in the Brazilian city of Belém
to a Brazilian woman named “Josefina de Ferreira.” With the end of the war, he
decided to return to his homeland to settle in it, accompanied by his wife.
Khalil Sabbagh has seven sons and
daughters, including: the journalist Issa Sabbagh, born in 1917, the nun
“Constanza”, and “Georgette” born in Tulkarem in 1921, a teacher in government
schools during the time of the British Mandate.
his political and military life
Khalil Sabbagh assumed the
presidency of the Christian Association in the city of Tulkarm, and in 1921 he
represented Tulkarm in the Fourth Palestinian Arab Conference, which is the
highest Palestinian parliamentary legislative body at the time of the British
Mandate. He was also one of the signatories in 1921 of the joint
Islamic-Christian protest statement rejecting the Balfour Declaration.
Khalil Sabbagh was one of the most
prominent local leaders at the time of the British Mandate, and he played a
significant role in fighting the British Mandate in Palestine. As he took over
the leadership of demonstrations, protests, and events against the British
Mandate, the Balfour Declaration, and Jewish immigration to Palestine, Sabbagh
also led an attack on the Jewish settlement of Hadera near Tulkarm in early
1923.
Khalil Sabbagh, as one of the most
prominent personalities and leaders of the Palestinian national movement during
the British Mandate period over Palestine, received in Tulkarm in 1931 the
Indian Islamic leader Shaukat Ali to discuss ways of joint cooperation and
coordination of positions between the two sides. They delivered a joint speech
in the old Tulkarm mosque in the presence of hundreds of Palestinians.
