Yasser Abdel Majeed Adib Abd Rabbo (Abu Bashar; born September 17, 1945 in Jaffa) is a left-leaning Palestinian politician and former Secretary of the Executive Committee of the PLO. He holds a bachelor's degree in economics and political science from the American University in Cairo. He was dismissed from the position of Secretary of the Executive Committee by President Mahmoud Abbas in 2015.
His beginnings
Abd Rabbo entered political life through his membership in the Arab Nationalist Movement and from there the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. In 1969, a section led by Nayef Hawatmeh separated from the Popular Front and founded the Popular Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which changed its name in 1974 to the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine. He served as Yasser Abd Rabbo served as Deputy Secretary-General of the Democratic Front, until he separated from it due to conflicting political positions between him and the Secretary-General of the Front, Nayef Hawatmeh. A number of old comrades of the Front, such as Saleh Raafat (the current Secretary-General of the Feda Party), the late Mamdouh Nofal (the former military advisor to President Yasser Arafat), and Issam Abdel Latif, were busy establishing what was called at the time the “Renewal Line,” from which the Palestinian Democratic Union Feda later emerged.
Yasser Abd Rabbo was one of Yasser Arafat's closest men, and he was entrusted with many Palestinian foreign missions, which were mostly secret. (The leftist Arafati - London Life). He was also one of the initiators of opening channels of communication between the Palestine Liberation Organization and the United States of America through the American ambassador in Tunisia at the time.
He held a number of ministerial positions, such as Minister of Culture and Information during the era of Yasser Arafat, and Minister of Cabinet Affairs in the government of Mahmoud Abbas, in addition to his position as Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization since the election of Mahmoud Abbas as President. He was dismissed by President Mahmoud Abbas from the position of Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization on July 7, 2015.
He is married to writer and director Liana Badr, and has two sons, Bashar and Tariq. He served as Secretary of the Executive Committee of the PLO, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appointed him as General Supervisor of the official media, especially the Palestinian Radio and Television Corporation.
