Information
Abd al-Salam al-Nabulsi (August 23,
1899 - July 5, 1968) was an actor of Palestinian origin. He was born on August
23, 1899 in Tripoli, Lebanon. Nickname in artistic circles as (The Count). At
the age of 20, he moved to Cairo, worked in journalism before turning to
directing and acting, and major stars such as Ismail Yassin, Abdel Halim Hafez,
Muhammad Fawzi and Farid al-Atrash participated. He returned to Lebanon in 1962
and managed the United Arts Film Company. He got married at the age of 60, and
became bankrupt at the end of his life due to the bankruptcy of the Antra Bank
in Beirut. He was suffering from heart disease and hid it from his surroundings
in order to preserve his artistic career. He died on July 5, 1968 due to an
acute heart attack.
about his life
His grandfather was the first judge
of Nablus, as well as his father, and he grew up in a religious family, and
when Abd al-Salam reached the age of twenty, his father sent him to Cairo to
enroll in Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, so he memorized the Noble Qur’an and excelled in
the Arabic language, in addition to his mastery of the French that he learned
in Beirut, in 1925 Al-Nabulsi worked in the artistic and literary journalism in
more than one magazine, including Misr Al-Jadida, Al-Latif Al-Musawra and
Al-Sabah.

in Egypt
The first opportunity for Nabulsi
in Egyptian cinema came at the hands of Ms. Asia in the movie “Ghada al-Sahra”directed by Wadad Orfi in 1929. Although it was the movie “A Prick of Conscience”in 1931 directed by Ibrahim Lama that opened the doors of cinema for him in the
thirties during that period, with a number Among the symbols of art at that
time, including the Lama Brothers, Togo Mizrahi, Youssef Wahbi, Asia, and Ahmed
Jalal. He was not satisfied with acting only, but worked as an assistant
director in many of them, especially Youssef Wahbi's films, but in 1947 he was
forced to devote himself entirely to acting after the movie "The Red
Mask", especially after the increased demand for it after the spread of
the wave of comedy films at that time. Al-Nabulsi’s beginnings were in the
roles of the reckless young man, the son of egoists, and he was not funny in
many films, including “Determination” by Kamal Selim in 1939, “Laila Bint Al-Reef”by Togo Mizrahi in 1941, and “The Straight Path” by the same director in 1943
and others. He starred in the movie The Ladies Barber. His last films with
Farid al-Atrash in Egypt were in the year 1957 and “You Are My Love.” Faten
Hamama and Omar Sharif also participated in the movie “Land of Peace” directed
by Kamal al-Sheikh in the year 1957, in which he embodied a very human role,
where he played the character A Palestinian man lives with his clan under the
Israeli occupation and appears throughout the film as a coward and a coward,
but the end reveals that he was the first to sacrifice his life while helping
the Egyptian commando in an operation behind enemy lines.
Abd al-Salam al-Nabulsi also
starred in many films with the artist Ismail Yassin. By the end of 1962, Abd
al-Halim Hafez was supposed to participate in the movie “The Idol of the
Masses”, which is the role played by the artist Fouad al-Muhandis.
In Lebanon
He left to Lebanon after his
problems with taxes aggravated, which amounted to 13 thousand pounds at the
time. His attempts, which he started in 1961 to reduce it to 9 thousand, did
not succeed. He started sending a monthly transfer of only 20 pounds to the tax
authority, which means that it will take 37 years to pay the amount owed by him.
What the Tax Authority considered evidence of his lack of seriousness in
paying, so it decided three years after his departure, that is, in 1965, to
quarantine the furniture of his rented apartment in Zamalek, which was not
worth the required amount. The case remained pending until his death in 1968,
despite the intervention of many art icons in Egypt, led by Kawkab al-Sharq Umm
Kulthum.
In Beirut, Nabulsi lived as a king
and became in 1963 a director of the United Film Company, and contributed to
increasing the number of films produced every year in Lebanon. The most
important of which is with the artist Sabah, with whom he previously
participated in the films “Street of Love”, “The Holy Bond” and “Habib Hayati”.
He married one of his admirers (Georgette Sabat) and completed the marriage
procedures at his friend Philemon Wehbe's villa without the knowledge of the
girl's family, who entered into a bitter struggle with him during which they
forced him to divorce her before the court ruled the validity of the marriage
and reconciliation took place between them.
duets
Although a large number of stars
participated in their films, he participated more intensely with some stars.
With Ismail Yassin
Abd al-Salam al-Nabulsi met Ismail
Yassin in 36 films between 1946 and 1967 (although in some films they did not
meet in the same scene), and they were initially playing supporting roles for
first-class stars such as Farid al-Atrash, Muhammad Fawzi, and Kamal
al-Shennawi. Then Al-Nabulsi worked as a supporting actor in the films starring
Ismail Yassin, and Ismail Yassin in return played a supporting role in
Al-Nabulsi's first absolute starring role in the movie Barber of Ladies in
1960. Thus, Ismail Yassin is most likely more than one example with Al-Nabulsi.
The films in which the two stars acted are:
Harem al-Basha (1946), The Bride of
the Sea (1947), Long Live the Art, Love and Madness (1948), Fatima, Marika and
Rachel, Imp Hanim, I Love You (1949), The Last Lie (1950), The End of a Story,

The Magic Lantern (1960), The Three Musketeers (1962), Karam El Fawa (1967).
With Farid al-Atrash
Abd al-Salam al-Nabulsi met Farid
al-Atrash in 16 films, starting with Intisar al-Shabab in 1941 (Farid's first
film) to al-Hob al-Kabir in 1969 (Nabulsi's last film), and thus al-Nabulsi is
more than an example with Farid al-Atrash. The films that the two stars acted
in together are:
Intisar al-Shabab (1941) Jamal and
Dalal (1945) The Honeymoon (1945) I Can't Do It (1946) I Love You (1949) Afrita
Hanim (1949) The Last Lie (1950) Come and Peace (1951) What You Say Lahad

to Your Love (1956) • You Are My Love (1957) • The Great Love ( 1968).
With Abdel Halim Hafez
Abd al-Salam al-Nabulsi met with
Abd al-Halim Hafez in five films, and thus he is more than one example with Abd
al-Halim. The films they starred in together are:
Nights of Love (1955), The Boy of
My Dreams (1957), Street of Love (1958), A Tale of Love (1959), A Day in My
Life (1961).
his death
As for his death, events quickly
followed in recent months, especially after Intra Bank in Beirut declared its
bankruptcy, which meant the bankruptcy of Nabulsi as well, because he was
putting all his money in this bank. His complaints of stomach pain increased,
so that the artist Sabah, who was his companion to Tunisia to shoot the movie
“The Journey of Happiness,” said that she was hearing his pain groans from the
next room in the hotel, although he was keen to open the water taps so that his
pains would not be louder. He also felt that his death was approaching to the
point that he would leave the key to his room from outside, and after his
return his condition worsened until he completely abstained from food days
before his departure until it was the night of July 5, 1968, when he breathed
his last before arriving at the hospital, and his wife did not find the funeral
expenses. So his friend, the artist Farid al-Atrash, took over through his
brother Fouad, who was trying to hide the news from Farid, but he learned about
it from the newspapers and collapsed ill, grieving over the death of a lifetime
friend.
A few days after his death, the
artist, Emerald, and she was a friend of his, announced a secret regarding the
truth of his illness, as she confirmed that he was not suffering from a stomach
disease, as was rumored, but he was a heart patient ten years ago. And that he
deliberately concealed this even from the closest people to him so that the
directors and producers would not evade him and keep him away from their films,
and that she knew this by chance, when he sent some medical reports with her to
the international doctor, Dr. Gibson, who was supervising the treatment of
Farid al-Atrash, was the one who told her the truth about Abd al-Salam
al-Nabulsi's illness without knowing that al-Nabulsi was hiding it. After her
return, she told him what she knew, so he cried in front of her and swore to
her to keep this secret, which she did until his death on July 5, 1968, which
occurred as a result of a heart attack. sharp
