Palestinian actor Ghassan Matar, known for portraying iconic heros as well as villains in Egyptian cinema, died on Friday, 27-2-2015 at 77 after a prolonged fight with stomach cancer.
Born Arafat Dawoud al-Matary in Jaffa, Palestine, he and his family then migrated to Lebanon after the 1948 war, where his family lived in the Badawi Camp in Northern Lebanon.
He acted in many Palestinian and Egyptian movies and participated in theater companies and television series in Egypt. Matar also served as the General Secretary of the Palestinian Actors Federation and was a member in the Palestinian Journalists Union.
In 1985, his wife and son were killed in an airstrike on Palestinian camps in Lebanon, and he learned of their deaths while on set in Cairo.
On Feb. 15, Matar was admitted to Safaa hospital in Mohandessin district of Cairo after his health deteriorated.
Matar was also a member of the Palestinian Liberation Front which offered Friday its condolences on his death, Palestinian News Agency WFA reported.
“Matar’s death is a big loss for our people and the cause, many of his works greatly enhanced the culture of resistance and challenge against the occupation,” the Front stated.
