Rafat Fares was born in Nazareth 1909, studied in Jerusalem; graduated from Sihyoun School in 1925; he then joined the American University of Beirut; graduated with a BA in Chemistry and Natural Science 1928, studied Medicine 1933. Rafat worked in the Chest Diseases Hospitals in Lebanon from 1933-1935; he then returned to Palestine where he worked at the Public Health Directorate from 1935-1948; director of Beit Safafa Hospital.
In 1946, he was awarded the First International Prize from the British Society for Heart and Chest.
