Information
Ghaleb Shaath, a Palestinian
director, was born in 1935 in Jerusalem, and immigrated with his family to Gaza
following the Nakba in 1948. He died in Cairo in 2022.
Education and career
Ghaleb Shaath studied architecture
at Cairo University, before working for some time in Saudi Arabia, then
obtaining a diploma in engineering from Vienna in 1963 and a diploma in
directing from the Film Institute in Vienna in 1967, which was a very important
station in his professional and personal biography, in which he watched films
and got to know On high European artistic spaces, however, watching films that
advocate Zionism there made him go to higher studies in cinema and directing, and
he obtained his degree in 1967, the year of the setback, before which he became
acquainted with the Fatah movement in Europe and affiliated with it.
He achieved an important
professional experience in Egyptian television, when he performed skits and
evening parties, before directing his only feature film, for which he became
famous for a long time, “Shadows on the Other Side” (Mahmoud Yassin, Naglaa
Fathi, Madiha Kamel, 1974 production), which was banned by censorship first,
before it was banned. He authorized it after winning a prize at a festival in
Czechoslovakia (I saw it for the first time in Tetouan, accompanied by Ghaleb).
He founded with a group of Egyptian directors the “New Cinema Group” in the
seventies, and during his artistic career he contributed to the establishment
of the Palestinian cinema stream in Lebanon with the Samed Foundation. He also
worked on translating some movie scripts into Arabic and won several awards for
his movie “Shadows on the Other Side” by Mahmoud. Diab, and the films “Earth
Day” and “The Key”.
Death
Ghaleb Shaath passed away on Sunday
morning, 17 July 2022, in Cairo, at the age of eighty-eight.
