Palestinian Wissam Al-Jaafari wins an award for short film in Cannes
The film “Ambience” by the young Palestinian director Wissam Al-Jaafari won the third prize, shared with the Polish film “Duszyczka” by Barbara Robtek, in the short film competition, at the 72nd session (May 14 - 25, 2019) of the Cannes International Film Festival.
The film tells the story of a young man from Dheisheh camp who cannot find a place to record his violin playing. But he plays it a lot, from the time he wakes up until the end of the night. In addition, there is noise caused by neighbors, and there is what resembles a routine life that is repeated daily, and the repetition extends to the house in which he lives. He searches a lot for what he wants, and in the end he finds what he wants: the music of the neighborhood, the camp, and the people, and the music of weddings and demonstrations.
Viewers of the film wrote after it was shown in Cannes that the film says in the end that “people’s lives will be its music,” noting that Al-Jaafari himself is a student from the Dheisheh camp as well. He studied in a Palestinian college and continued his humble life path, until he reached Cannes and its international festival, seizing Award in the short film competition.
