His early life and education
Mustafa Moein Mahmoud Ayyash was born in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip on September 18, 1992 to a Palestinian Muslim family. He studied radio and television, business administration, and Palestinian studies and research. He completed his postgraduate studies at the University College of Applied Sciences affiliated with the Islamic University of Gaza . He then moved to complete his undergraduate studies at the Amman Ahliyya University in Jordan, and also moved to complete his studies at Karabuk University in Ankara , Turkey .
The Palestinian-Israeli War
The Gaza Now News Agency, founded by Mustafa Ayyash in 2005, played a vital role in disseminating news about the Israeli-Palestinian war . His family was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, after Israeli aircraft targeted his home on 22 November 2023. His father, mother, husbands, sons, sisters, their husbands and children, along with other displaced persons who were in his family’s home, were killed. His brother, Mohammed Ayyash, a photojournalist for Gaza Now, was also killed in the attack. The Permanent Observer for Palestine to the United Nations, Salah Abdel Shafi , and the head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, mourned the death of his family. The United Nations mistakenly used Mustafa Ayyash’s name instead of Mohammed Ayyash in its report on the killing of journalists in the Israeli-Palestinian war. The killing of Mustafa Ayyash was not published anywhere except in the UN report. The Israeli media exploited this report to cast doubt on Gaza Now after the US sanctions were announced. Ayyash tried to file a complaint against Israel after his family was killed, but the authorities refused to receive a complaint against Israel.
His arrest and punishment
The US Treasury Department announced sanctions against Mustafa Ayyash on March 27, 2024. The UK also announced sanctions against him for allegedly providing financial services to Hamas.
Austrian police arrested Mustafa Ayash on April 18, 2024, following US and UK sanctions. Austrian police also accessed his WhatsApp account , which was followed by 300,000 users, and closed it, in addition to closing the channel’s pages and Facebook accounts , which were followed by 8 million users.
