Information
Maha Nazih Al-Husseini is a Palestinian journalist and human rights activist based in Gaza . She is the Strategy Director at the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor in Geneva , and a member of the Marie Colvin Journalists' Network. She began her career in journalism covering the Israeli military campaign on the Gaza Strip in July 2014.
Educational and professional life
In 2013, Al-Husseini obtained a BA in English and French Literature from Al-Azhar University in Gaza , and later graduated with a MA in Political Science from Al-Azhar University (2018).
Al-Husseini writes for several international newspapers, most notably the Middle East Eye , The New Humanist and Rory Peck.
Prior to her work in human rights, Maha Husseini worked as a correspondent in conflict zones, reporting on human rights violations in the Palestinian territories .
Until 2019, Al-Husseini served as Executive Director of the Euro-Mediterranean Regional Office in the Palestinian Territories. From 2019 to 2021, Al-Husseini served as Executive Director of Impact International, a London- based international policy firm . In 2021, Al-Husseini returned to work at the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor , where she served as the organization’s Strategic Director.
In addition to her work for human rights organizations, Al-Husseini works as a freelance journalist for the Middle East Eye and The New Humanitarian newspapers, covering the conflict and its impact on the people of the Gaza Strip . As a human rights activist, she is active in organizing Euro-Mediterranean participation in the Human Rights Council, and delivering oral statements on the human rights situation at the UN Human Rights Council.
In addition, Al-Husseini appears regularly on satellite channels, media outlets and news outlets where she is interviewed about the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories, including Al Jazeera , Al Arabiya TV , Anadolu Agency , Al Arabiya New and Kufiyya.
Achievements and Awards
International Awards
In 2020, Al-Husseini won the Martin Adler Award for her work as a freelance journalist.
In June 2024, she received the International Women’s Media Foundation’s (IWMF) Courage in Journalism Award for her reporting on the war in Gaza for the Middle East Eye . However, the award was withdrawn about a week after it was given to her, according to an announcement from the Washington-based foundation, which stated: “The foundation has become aware, within the past 24 hours, of comments made by Maha Husseini over the past few years that conflict with the values of the foundation. As a result, we have withdrawn the Courage in Journalism Award that was given to her.” It stressed that its mission and the awards it awards are based on “integrity and opposition to bigotry,” and that it “has not and will not condone or support opinions or statements that do not adhere to these principles.”
